Checking the thread count is another way of choosing the best duvet cover. Usually the label has all the details of the thread count. A higher thread count refers to a softer fabric and a lower thread count to a coarser one.
Duvet covers feature buttons and zippers, which make it easier to remove these covers and wash them. However, the duvet in itself must not be washed unless specifically mentioned on the label as 'washable'. The reason being, a duvet is made of soft, natural filling, which may transform into clumps after drying.
You should also consider whether you want a natural filling (i.e. duck or goose down or silk) or a synthetic filling. Each has its own pros and cons. Natural-filled duvets are lighter in weight and tend to last longer than synthetic-filled ones -- as much as 30 years as compared to 10 years for synthetic fill. As against that, natural duvets cannot be washed at home, since the filling must be dried completely, which is difficult to achieve with a home dryer. Some people also have allergic reactions to the feathers in natural fill.
There are many different styles or types of duvet covers. From silk ones to flannel ones. Some inspired by Native Americans or maybe even nature. Decide what your preferences are and go from there.
