A duvet is designed to fit the size specifications of a bed. It is, thus, sold in King, Queen, Twin, and other fixed sizes. Therefore, unlike comforters, duvets do not spill much over the sides of the bed.
Stuff the duvet completely within the cover. If the duvet cover has fasteners, fit them at the other end of the duvet and close the opening of the cover.
Duvets and duvet covers are analogous to pillows and pillow cases. Once you have put the duvet inside the cover, there is a closure system to close the opening, and this can widely vary. While some have zippers, others have buttons, and still others have Velcro tape. It's not the type of closure system that matters, but the sturdiness is what you need to check. Look for broken buttons or zippers that just won't close. A high-quality duvet cover would have a solid and sturdy closure system.
