Sheets: Obviously, you will be provided with a basic bed and a mattress, but you need to get sheets for the same. Most dorms are furnished with extra-long twin beds, therefore, ensure you buy sheets that fit these beds. You will not need a sheet with a very high thread count, but make sure that the quality is good. Also, buy your sheets according to the climate of the place your college is situated in. Opt for flannel sheets for cold climes and cotton sheets for warmer ones.
Choose a mattress which is comfortable for your kid. Kids have a tendency to learn whatever you teach them. So obviously it's up to you that you provide them with something soft and comfortable for their growing bodies. Always remember to choose the right kind of mattress with a good amount of spring. Would they like memory foam? I would not advise you to purchase it as memory foams are usually very firm.
Synthetic-filled duvets are, as mentioned above, heavier and have a shorter lifespan. However, you can wash them at home if your machine is large enough, and their filling is hypoallergenic.
